A road trip through the South Indian coastline

Incredible India indeed even for someone born and brought up in India. There is so much to explore that one wonders where to start in India. On this occasion we explore the South Indian Coastline and fly from Mumbai to Chennai where our road trip begins.

Roasting corn on a windy beach  with makeshift stoves producing fire streaks

This is a sight one is sure to catch in Elliot's beach in Chennai

 Crocodile Bank

Crocodile bank - about 60 kilometers from Chennai is a success story of preservation and protection of three endangered species of Indian crocs - mugger, saltwater croc and gharial

Crocodiles don't always open their jaws in aggression and as a sign to bite things off. In fact in most occasions  this is an attempt to cool off as they do not have sweat glands

Crocodiles have lived on the earth since the age of dinosaurs about 240 million years ago . So they have seen the dinosaurs become extinct and humans become the most dominant species on the planet. Traits that have probably helped them survive unlike the dinosaurs are an excellent eyesight specially at night, amphibious capabilities , and ability to survive in cold and dark for long periods without food because of being cold blooded

Gigantic Banyan tree at Auroville

Auroville is an experimental township in the state of Tamil Nadu near Pondicherry. It was founded in 1968 by Mirra Alfassa (also known as "The Mother") and designed by architect Roger Anger. As stated in Alfassa's first public message about the township, "Auroville is meant to be a universal town where men and women of all countries are able to live in peace and progressive harmony, above all creeds, all politics and all nationalities. The purpose of Auroville is to realize human unity." The dome seen above is called Matrimandir and is the soul of the city

The world's second largest mangrove forest at Pichavaram. As we navigate through the dense mangroves , we wonder if this is similar to wading through the waters in the Amazonian rainforests

Once a port that traded with Rome and Greece, the tiny commercial center gradually lost its importance to the larger city of Nagapattinam. The canal built to link this town with Vedaranyam still lies to the west. The town was among the worst hit by the tsunami caused by the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake. The town is home to a significant Roman Catholic shrine dedicated to God in the name of Our Lady of Good Health,Basilica of Our Lady of Good Health.

Dhanushkoti ( Rameshwaram)

The tragedy at Dhanushkoti took place in 1964 when a cyclone hit the area and destroyed the small town and a passenger train was washed away killing hundreds of people. Now this place is reduced to a picturesque but an isolated "ghost town"

Sights from the bridge connecting mainland India to the island of Rameshwaram. Srilanka is just fifty kilometers from here. According to Hindu mythology, this is the place from where the Hindu god Rama built a bridge, across the sea to Lanka to rescue his wife Sita from her abductor Ravana.

Kanyakumari or Cape Comorin

The Vivekananda rock memorial stands on one of two rocks located about 500 meters east off mainland of Vavathurai, India's southernmost tip. It was built in 1970 in honour of Swami Vivekananda . He swam to this rock and meditated. It is said that he attained enlightenment on the rock. The merger of three seas -Bay of Bengal, Arabian Sea and Indian Ocean can be seen from these rocks.

The view from the southern most tip in mainland India looking down south. If we continue swimming in this direction, we will reach Antarctica.

And this is what we see from the southern most tip looking backwards towards India. You are literally looking at the entire Indian subcontinent from here.
